The second edition is out

AII_cover_engTo everyone who has read my book ‘An Impossible Invention’ — thanks for all your support so far! Everyone of you has meant a lot to me, and also all personal messages, emails, reviews, comments, text messages and even phone calls that I have received from all over the world.

Now a second edition of the book is out, in English and in Swedish.

It’s available as e-book, both at An Impossible Invention Shop and through Amazon. It’s also available as paperback through Create Space and within a few days through Amazon. Click here for details on how to get the book.

An Italian translation is underway and will hopefully be released in the beginning of next year.

The new edition contains corrections of minor errors and a few updates to the story.

Among the updates are some more details on Andrea Rossi’s studies in philosophy, specifically in phenomenology, that apparently contributed to a mindset which seemed necessary to insist going ahead in such a controversial field as cold fusion.

I have also added a more detailed examination of the legal saga of Rossi. In the first edition I wrongly stated that he was acquitted from environmental charges. However, these charges regarded above all lacking permits for handling of special waste, and not, as some believe, illegal dumping or discharge of toxic waste. I have studied sentences and transcriptions of testimonials, and it’s clear that Rossi was never convicted for fraud of this kind. On the contrary, it was shown that Rossi’s business really processed and sold the waste materials that were purchased.

I also note that the officer in the Italian financial police corps Guardia di Finanza who in the late ‘80s commanded the region where Rossi’s businesses were located and apparently coordinated the systematic surveillance of his activities—general Emilio Spaziante from the town of Caserta in southern Italy—was convicted recently for his involvement in a major Italian multi-billion-Euro corruption scandal.

Another update concerns the findings in the beginning of 2014 regarding the experimental demo set-up by the company Defkalion, showing that the demo was proven not to be reliable. The text about Defkalion in the book now reflects the current situation better. It can’t be completely excluded that Defkalion has a working technology under development, but proof, data and testimonials showing this are essentially lacking. (UPDATE: Since this is intensely discussed on my blog I want to stress the following: My assessment and strong belief is that Defkalion’s technology doesn’t work, and there are plenty of indications in the book that the company played a false game. Yet, because I subscribe to the principle of not judging without proof, I prefer to leave Defkalion the benefit of the doubt until this is proven).

There’s also a short comment on the not so well researched coverage of this story and my book by national Swedish radio, Sveriges Radio.

Finally I have added a few pages on the latest third party test of Rossi’s E-Cat, including various comments and discussions.

For those who follow the field of cold fusion, and the story of the E-Cat and Rossi, there’s basically no unknown information revealed in the second edition. The main purpose has been to produce a new edition that is more up-to-date, and with fewer errors, better suited for anyone who wants to get a comprehensive picture of the whole story.

For those who have already read my book, I hope it will be easier to recommend it now that there’s an updated version available. And I hope those who have not read the book will find it a good read, as the book reviews indicate so far (check the Amazon listing).

In a few days I will try to reach all those who have bought the first edition in any form, and offer a free download of the e-book version of the second edition. Please reach out to me via email if you have bought the book and you haven’t got this offer.

There are still a few copies of the first paperback edition in stock, both in English and in Swedish, that I will sell at a discount while stocks last. The discounted price will apply at An Impossible Invention Shop. The first edition comes with an errata page, covering errors and most updates, making it a good alternative to the second edition.

Thanks again to all of you!

PS — self publishing books is fun and easy today. Yet, when updating a book like this there’s more to it than you might expect.

The layout original is made in Adobe Indesign. I have two file versions — one optimized for the print layout and one optimized for the e-book. The print version is exported to a pdf file, while the e-book version is exported to an Epub file. I then need three copies of the Epub file — one that remains in Epub format for Ipad and most e-book readers, one that I convert into Mobi format for my own distribution to users of Amazon’s Kindle, and one that is uploaded to Amazon for conversion into Amazon’s own Kindle format. Each one of these three e-book files needs its own ISBN number, different from the ISBN for print (for other changes than minor corrections, the book is considered to be a new edition, which requires a new series of ISBN numbers).

I then repeat all this for the Swedish edition, which means that in total I need to produce 14 files for every change I make to the book. And, as I wrote, an Italian translation is underway…

  1. First congratulations on your first book Mats! You did much to help all of us understand Mr. Rossi’s unusual actions from a different perspective, one of understanding. As the Wright Brothers changed the world at Kitty Hawk, Andrea has changed the world for the better with the Rossi Effect. Kudos to you for bringing a very private man into view.

If the offer is still good, I would appreciate a free copy of the second edition if the offer still stands.
